What Is Clairaudience? Signs of Psychic Hearing and How to Develop It

Have you ever heard your name called when no one was there? Or had a short, clear phrase pop into your mind that turned out to be exactly what you needed to hear? Many people describe experiences like these as clairaudience.

What is clairaudience? The word comes from French and means 'clear hearing.' Clairaudience is one of the 'clair' senses — intuitive abilities that mirror our physical senses. Clairvoyance is clear seeing, clairsentience is clear feeling, claircognizance is clear knowing, and clairaudience is receiving intuitive information as sound, words or an inner voice.

For most people, clairaudience doesn't sound like someone speaking out loud. It is usually quieter — a thought that arrives in words rather than images, often in a tone that feels slightly different from your normal inner dialogue.

Common signs of clairaudience:

You hear short, helpful phrases in your mind at the right moment.

Song lyrics or lines from conversations repeat until you realize they hold a message.

You hear ringing, humming or high-pitched tones, especially during meditation (always rule out medical causes such as tinnitus with a doctor).

You talk things through with yourself and get surprisingly wise answers.

You are very sensitive to sound and noise.

You've heard your name called just as you were falling asleep or waking up.

How to tell intuition from ordinary thought: genuine clairaudient guidance tends to be brief, calm, kind and neutral. It rarely rambles, criticizes or creates panic. Fearful, repetitive or harsh inner voices are more often worry or old patterns — not guidance.

Exercises to develop clairaudience:

1. Listen to silence. Sit quietly for five minutes and notice every sound, from the farthest to the closest. Then listen to the silence between them. This sharpens your inner hearing.

2. Ask and listen. Write a simple question, take three slow breaths, and note the first words that come. Don't judge them — just record and review later.

3. Keep a guidance journal. Note phrases, songs and 'random' words. Over weeks, patterns become clear and your confidence grows.

4. Use music mindfully. Before playing a random song, ask a question and notice whether the lyrics speak to it.

5. Practice with a partner. In a guided class, practicing with others gives you real feedback — the fastest way to build trust in what you hear.

A note on wellbeing: hearing voices that are distressing, commanding or constant is not clairaudience and is worth discussing with a medical professional. Healthy intuitive development should feel grounding, not frightening.
