The Clairs Explained: Clairvoyance, Clairaudience, Clairsentience and More

What if your senses reach further than you think?

Many spiritual traditions describe a set of intuitive abilities known as the 'clairs.' The word comes from French and simply means 'clear.' Each clair mirrors one of the physical senses, offering a different way that intuitive information may arrive.

From a metaphysical perspective, these aren't rare superpowers. They are often described as natural extensions of perception that everyone carries to some degree. Here is a gentle guide to the six most common clairs.

👁️ Clairvoyance: clear seeing

Clairvoyance is intuitive information that comes as images. People describe flashes of pictures, symbols, colors or short 'mind movies,' often seen with the inner eye rather than the physical eyes. It is traditionally linked to the third eye, the energy center between the brows. Signs include vivid dreams, strong visual imagination and noticing meaningful symbols that keep repeating.

👂 Clairaudience: clear hearing

Clairaudience is guidance that arrives as sound or words. It rarely sounds like someone speaking aloud. It is more often a calm, brief phrase in the mind, a song lyric that won't leave or a gentle tone in meditation. True guidance tends to be kind and neutral, never harsh or commanding.

💗 Clairsentience: clear feeling

Clairsentience is sensing information through the body and emotions. Many empaths are strongly clairsentient: they feel the mood of a room the moment they walk in, or notice a sensation in their own body around certain people. It is often linked to the heart.

✨ Claircognizance: clear knowing

Claircognizance is a sudden sense of certainty without knowing why. An answer simply drops in, complete, often while you are busy doing something else. Those who are claircognizant may describe it as a quiet 'download' of knowing, traditionally associated with the crown of the head.

🌸 Clairalience and clairgustance: clear smelling and tasting

These two are less common but often reported. Clairalience is smelling a scent with no physical source, such as a grandmother's perfume or pipe smoke, often felt as a sign of comfort or presence. Clairgustance is the same experience through taste.

Which clair is yours?

Most people lean toward one or two clairs. Ask yourself how your hunches usually arrive: do you see it, hear it, feel it or just know it? Your answer is often your strongest clair, and the others can be gently developed over time.

Simple ways to begin:

1. Ground first. A few slow breaths and attention on your feet help intuitive impressions feel calm rather than overwhelming.

2. Keep a journal. Write down images, words, feelings and 'knowings' as they come, then check back later to see what proved meaningful.

3. Practice in small, everyday moments. Guess who is calling before you look, or notice the first impression you get about a place.

4. Learn with others. Practicing with a teacher and a supportive group gives honest feedback, the fastest way to build trust in your intuition.

A note on wellbeing: the clairs are spiritual and intuitive concepts, not scientific claims. Healthy intuitive development should feel grounding and kind. Experiences that are distressing, frightening or constant are worth discussing with a qualified medical or mental-health professional.
